Gone are the days when fitness prowess was associated with eating meat. Some studies have recently shown that plant-based diets, including vegan ones, can actually enhance athletic performance. Don’t believe the hype? These world-renowned celebrity athletes all credit veganism for their success.

5 films and TV shows almost certain to make you turn vegan

Lewis Hamilton

This F1 superstar first turned to veganism out of love for the environment. But what he didn’t expect was that his new plant-based diet would also affect his performance on the racing track.

Hamilton has since said that going plant-based completely changed his life. Just last March, he told Men’s Health UK: “I'm physically in better shape than I've ever been, and I'm more successful than ever right now, and my plant-based programme has played such a big role in that.”

Venus Williams

Williams switched to a vegan diet after learning she has an autoimmune disease called Sjögren’s syndrome in 2011. She and her sister Serena then added a large amount of raw plant foods and smoothies to their diets.

While their eating regime is still fairly strict today, these queens of tennis have gradually eased up over the years, allowing themselves cheat days of chicken or fish every once in a while.

Derrick Morgan

This former NFL player officially made the leap into veganism in 2017 and has never looked back. Once he did, he then convinced his wife Charity Morgan to join his plant-based ways. Today, she’s a celebrity vegan chef with her own massive following, and together the couple manages the plant-based diets of Morgan’s former NLF team, the Tennessee Titans.

Who are the game changers to help you succeed this Veganuary?

Novak Djokovic

The Serbian athlete has publicly stated that his success in tennis is due to his plant-based eating plans. “[Food is] the fuel that determines how I play, how I recover, and how alert I am on the court. I attribute a great deal of my professional success to my diet,” he told GQ Australia.

Scott Jurek

Ultramarathoner Scott Jurek is always quick to cite his healthy diet as the source of his stamina and mental clarity on the trail.

Veganism: why it’s not just a diet, more a way of life

Growing up on a “meat and potatoes” diet, the athlete switched to a plant-based one in college after learning of his family’s history of chronic illnesses. “If [athletes] aren’t fuelled properly, they don’t have great results,” he once told GQ.

Nate Diaz

The super-fit MMA fighter and UFC contender has been a vegan since he was 18 years old, a choice that was inspired by his brother, former welterweight champion Nick Diaz.

In an interview with Men’s Journal, he said, “I think you’re a smarter and more intelligent fighter [when you go vegan]. Me and my brother are at the top of the game and have been for a long time. We’re obviously doing something right.”
