Veganism might be one of the biggest health movements in the world right now. And not only are people deciding to ditch meat and dairy to live on a plant-based diet for the sake of their health, but for the sake of the planet.
Of course, plenty of celebrities have jumped on the vegan bandwagon, too. But while Pamela Anderson and Alicia Silverstone, for instance, have stuck with it, others soon gave it up.

Here are 10 stars who gave veganism a go only to ultimately discover that the lifestyle was a bit too much for them.

From vegan to flexitarian – what’s the best diet for you?

I was a vegan for about seven months. I lost so much weight I almost lost a job. They said, ‘If you don’t gain 15, 20 pounds we gonna have to recast.’ So I went straight to Shake Shack and got my life back together

Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway ditched veganism for good after eating fish again gave her a health boost. She was filming for Interstellar in Iceland when she felt compelled to try a piece of fresh fish at a Michelin-starred restaurant. The actress told Tatler that her “brain felt like a computer rebooting”. She “just felt better” the next day, she said in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar. In contrast, when she only ate plant-based food she “didn’t feel good or healthy”.

Miley Cyrus

After following a vegan diet for six years between 2013 and 2019, Miley Cyrus revealed in September on podcast The Joe Rogan Experience that she was no longer living on plant-based meals and had started eating fish again. The Midnight Sky singer revealed: “I was vegan for a very long time and I’ve had to introduce fish and omegas [back] into my life because my brain wasn’t functioning properly. Now I’m so much sharper.” Since quitting veganism, the pop star has received a backlash from the vegan community.

Liam Hemsworth

Liam Hemsworth – Cyrus’ ex-husband – was a vegan for almost four years before a painful health issue forced him to change his diet. In an interview with Men’s Health in April, he said: “I got a kidney stone. It was one of the most painful weeks of my life. I was doing press for Isn’t It Romantic. But I had to go to the hospital and get surgery.”

The Hunger Games star reportedly had a calcium oxalate stone, which he blamed on his regular breakfast smoothie of five handfuls of spinach, almond milk, almond butter, and vegan protein. He then had to “completely rethink” his diet and add back in other foods.

Jared Leto is now 48 years old, but he credits his youthful appearance to sleep and a plant-based diet. However, he also admitted in a 2016 interview with Rolling Stone that he prefers to refer to himself as a “cheagan”, or a cheating vegan. The Suicide Squad star clarified: “I don’t eat meat ever. But if someone’s mum made a cookie and handed it to me, I’d probably take a bite, or if I’m in Alaska and there’s wild salmon out of the river, I’d probably eat it.”

Ellen DeGeneres

Ellen DeGeneres doesn’t have a reason for why she is no longer vegan, but after eight years of eating only fruit, vegetables and other plant-based foods, she has started to include eggs and fish in her diet. The talk show host has positive memories of plant-based eating, but her appetite has changed nonetheless. “I was healthier than I’d ever been, I loved being vegan,” she admitted on her 2019 Netflix comedy special Relatable. “But just in the last year or two for no reason really, I started eating a piece of fish once in a while. And I’ll eat eggs from chickens I know. If they are in someone’s backyard and they’re wandering around and they’re happy.”

Natalie Portman was vegan before it was cool. As an early adopter of the lifestyle, she even launched a vegan shoe collection with boutique Te Casan in 2008. However, when she was pregnant with her first child, Aleph, in 2011, she put veganism on hold. The Black Swan actress told ABC News: “I actually went back to being vegetarian when I became pregnant, just because I felt like I wanted that stuff. I was listening to my body to have eggs and dairy.” Portman has since made the transition back to veganism and told US Weekly in 2018 that both her kids, Aleph and Amalia, are vegans.

Kristen Bell

Like Portman, The Good Place actress Kristen Bell also transitioned away from veganism while pregnant, as she felt that she wasn’t getting enough energy from her existing diet. Bell went vegan in 2012 after watching the documentary Forks Over Knives, which explores the idea that veganism can prevent diseases like cancer and diabetes. However, when she was pregnant with her first daughter she started following just a vegetarian diet again. She told NBC news show Today: “During my first pregnancy, I was working and it felt like I needed more calories. I was pretty conscious of it.”

Samuel L. Jackson

Samuel L. Jackson gave up his plant-based diet because he had lost too much weight to play a movie role. During an appearance on radio show Breakfast Club Power in 2019, he said: “I was a vegan for about seven months. I lost so much weight I almost lost a job. They said, ‘If you don’t gain 15, 20 pounds we gonna have to recast.’ So I went straight to Shake Shack and got my life back together.”

Zooey Deschanel

Zooey Deschanel found veganism almost impossible alongside her other food sensitivities and reverted back to an omnivorous diet after six months. The New Girl star can’t eat soy or gluten, leaving little left on the menu as a vegan. She told Health magazine in 2011: “It was very difficult to eat and get enough calories. It was even impossible to eat at a vegan restaurant.” The actress would love to be a vegan like her sister, Bones star Emily Deschanel, who “has been a very, very committed vegan since high school”, but unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be.

Rapper Waka Flocka Flame started following a vegan diet in 2014 to lose weight, but revealed in a 2018 interview with Paper magazine that he had “dropped the vegan card” because he disliked the label and the attitudes of many vegans. He said, “I think the public scared me from being vegan, [vegans] scare people – people are really scared of vegans. They are like the cops. When vegans are around, people be trying to throw their food under the table, like, ‘Oh, the vegans!’” He continued: “I think saying that I’m a vegan is like putting a title on me. I’m making myself sound like I’m better than somebody else.” The No Hands rapper now prefers to call himself a “conscious eater” who thinks carefully about the food he consumes.
