5 smooth getaways by land, air and sea that avoid using Hong Kong International Airport

Oriental Pearl Radio and Television Tower in Shanghai, one of the destinations on Crystal Cruises’ luxury liner during its 15-day cruise in East Asia.
For the past several weeks, protests have gripped Hong Kong. While millions have been peacefully marching, there have also been some violent clashes that have left many residents concerned.

Some have even decided to get away from the city for a little while to avoid the chaos.

However, to make matters even more complicated, protesters also occupied Hong Kong International Airport, causing numerous flight cancellations.

So many are left wondering: now what? How can you get out of Hong Kong’s urban centres safely and comfortably?

Well, luckily, you have options. Check out some places you can head to in style:

Cruise to Tokyo and Shanghai

The popular shopping area of Shibuya in Tokyo, one of the cities visited on Crystal Cruises’ 15-day luxury cruise around East Asia.

Crystal Cruises offers a popular luxury cruise that sets sail from Hong Kong on a 15-day voyage around East Asia.

The liner stops in Tokyo for a few days, then hits the high seas again to visit Shanghai. With butlers in every suite, 24-hour room service and housekeeping twice a day, Crystal Cruises provides the perfect option for top-notch personalised service.

Bride’s Pool

Hopping on a motorcycle is one of the most relaxing ways to experience Hong Kong’s scenic vistas.

Riding along inland roads to Luk Keng will get you near the border with mainland China and far from the protests in the more urban areas of Hong Kong. (If you decide not to ride across the border to Shenzhen, you can get off your motorcycle and hike toward Bride’s Pool, a gorgeous array of pools and waterfalls in the region.)

Shenzhen

Two 15-minute helicopter rides can see you travel in style from Hong Kong to Shenzhen, mainland via Macau.

Helicopters are another popular option, thanks to their speed and convenience.

For instance, Sky Shuttle has a powerful fleet of helicopters that can take you from Hong Kong to Macau in only 15 minutes. Getting from Macau to Shenzhen only takes another 15 minutes. Sky Shuttle’s helicopters are also more spacious than typical alternatives and boast low interior noise levels.

Guangzhou

A high-speed rail link will take travellers from Hong Kong to the mainland Chinese city of Guangzhou in only 48 minutes.

Hong Kong is served by some of the most impressive high-speed rail options in the world.

The high-speed rail link between Hong Kong and mainland China travels at 200km/h (124 miles per hour) and can take you from West Kowloon Station to Guangzhou in 48 minutes flat. Then you are connected to the mainland’s vast transport network, allowing you to go wherever you like. The trains also feature 68 roomy first-class seats, each with its own personal audio systems, making for a comfortable and entertaining trip.

Bali

Pura Lempuyang Temple on the Indonesian holiday island of Bali, which is only a five-hour flight from Hong Kong by private jet.

Having your own private jet makes it easy to fly out of Hong Kong smoothly.

So why not take a trip to Bali? The Indonesian island is only a five-hour flight, and private jets offer discreet, comfortable travel on powerful planes.

You can also work with multilingual private jet crews, a particularly helpful feature for those who might be conducting international business while flying.

So just because Hong Kong International Airport is busy doesn’t mean you will struggle for good transport options. Hong Kong is known as a versatile, efficient and comfortable transport hub for a good reason – it offers numerous transit options around the world.

So where in the world will your getaway take you?
