Penang’s hawker food needs no introduction, but Malaysia’s very own Pearl of the Orient is also home to a thriving cafe scene. Since 2019 dawned, there have been plenty of new openings, and we’ve rounded up five new Insta-worthy cafes in Penang that give your tummy – and your feed – a taste of the sweet life. Jio Cafe View this post on Instagram Take a rest ♀️ A post shared by Evon TanG (@evon_tang_) on Jun 26, 2019 at 10:36pm PDT Playing on the Hokkien word meaning “to invite” and also sounding like jiao, the word for banana, this vibrant pink and yellow cafe is filled with bananas, and has a pretty pink “pool” filled with plastic balls and flamingo pool floats for you to take pictures in. It’s an Instagramer’s heaven, with multiple spots for you to take pictures with your friends – or, of course, of your food. In addition to the pool, there’s a blow-up chair with a yellow wall of bananas behind it by the entrance, and a pink and yellow room upstairs that resembles TeamLab’s Crystal Universe – if all the lights were replaced by bananas. Skip Jio’s mains and go straight for dessert: The lady in red is a show-stopper, as staff first dip a rose into liquid nitrogen, before crushing it and letting the petals rain down onto your cheesecake and macaroon. The marble counter and wooden floor make sure the star of the space – a red and pink flower wall – remains the focal point for your IG stories. Even the reusable stainless steel straws are a metallic rainbow colour. Order one of the signature cheese teas – we suggest the dainty looking strawberry cheese tea – and strike your best pose in front of the flower wall. A post shared by Sugaa酥哥 Nagore Square (@sugaapenang) on Jun 23, 2019 at 4:26am PDT No, not BTS’ spitfire rapper, this is Suga with an extra “a” that will have you cheering for its mille-feuille creations. Mille-feuille is not something Malaysia is famous for, but new kid on the block Sugaa may change that, with the Chinese chain’s Insta-worthy mille-feuille, swan shaped pastries and fruit and milk teas. The swan series comes in three different flavours: scarlet durian, scarlet potato and scarlet cheesy. Durian fans will also be satisfied with Sugaa’s towering king of signature durian, that sees delicate pastry layered with durian, strawberries, mango, dragon fruit and custard. Where: 87, Jalan Nagor, 10050 Jelutong Kafka View this post on Instagram Love the burnt cheese cake. Feel like the soy milk overpowered the coffee taste in my flat white. However, it’s a pretty nice interior with lots of greenery and rustic feel. Might come back to try the food, it looks promising from the menu. A post shared by Alwayshungry.1 (@alwayshungry.1) on Sep 13, 2019 at 8:02pm PDT Kafka espouses a garden-meets-industrial chic cafe with a mixture of Asian and Western food. Housed in an airy clubhouse tastefully filled with greenery, it’s a serene oasis situated near the bustling Gurney Drive. The concrete walls juxtapose nicely with the mixture of plants, wooden chairs and plush sofas of different materials and colours. There are quiet nooks to be found, where you can sit and while away the hours with a good book. With a menu spanning breakfast, lunch and dinner, crowd-pleasers include the hearty spiced aubergine shakshuka and the burnt cheesecake. To beat the sweltering island heat, order a doughnut ice cream – a fluffy doughnut covered in a smooth soft serve, topped with heart-shaped sprinkles. The cafe has an ever-changing selection of cakes, all beautifully plated. Past flavours include strawberry and raspberry mousse cakes.
