Hong Kong’s 11 best Lunar New Year poon chois – from Michelin-starred or traditional to Indian or vegetarian – as restaurants go big for the Year of the Tiger

- Drunken Pot offers a version from the subcontinent with samosas, masalas, tandoori and naan, while Soil to Soul and Nina Hospitality boast vegetarian choices
- Five-star hotel restaurants Summer Palace, Dynasty, Ming Court and T’ang Court all offer Michelin-starred menus heavy on the abalone, scallops and fish maw
With social distancing restrictions in place in Hong Kong over Lunar New Year, it looks like entertaining at home will be the limit for most of us again this year. Happily, the uniquely Cantonese dish of poon choi – a large shared bowl of layered ingredients – can be easily ordered in, satisfying the family while being an easy option when dining at home.
Something different
Drunken Pot

The first Indian poon choi (HK$1,188 or US$150, serves six) is here. Prepared by fabulous hotpot specialist Drunken Pot, it includes beef masala, fish masala, tomato prawn, yellow curry abalone, butter chicken, tandoori chicken and samosas, along with naan to mop up the sauce, of course. The restaurant also caters for more traditional sorts with a classic abalone and fish maw pot (HK$1,388, serves six) or a spicy version (HK$1,188, serves six).

Nina Hospitality

Catering to the herbivores in town, this vegetarian option (HK$788, serves six) includes vegetarian abalone and chicken, black fungus and dried mushrooms allowing those who don’t eat meat to still savour some of the classic flavours. Of course, the hotel group also offers a traditional poon choi (HK$1,598, serves six) and a luxury lobster option (HK$2,480, serves six) as well.
