Hyatt, Rosewood, Intercontinental, Jumeirah – 4 best new hotels in Guangzhou and Shenzhen for a Lunar New Year getaway

China is leading the global charge for hotel construction, with some 400,000 rooms in development – here’s the Greater Bay Area’s hottest new openings, ideal for a quick getaway from Hong Kong or Macau
In recent years, the biggest pipeline of new hotels scheduled to open has been concentrated in the Asia-Pacific – and the majority of that pipeline is in China. With approximately 400,000 rooms under planning or construction, Shanghai is leading the charge, but Guangzhou and the Greater Bay Area are not far behind. Originally scheduled to open in 2019, travellers will have to wait just a bit longer for the new Conrad in Shenzhen and the 2,000-room Grand Lisboa Palace — designed by Karl Lagerfeld and Donatella Versace — on the Cotai Strip in Macau, and the high profile Londoner Macao by Sands.
Here, we elect the most exciting newly opened properties in the Greater Bay Area to ring in Chinese New Year 2020 with a luxury getaway.
Jumeirah Hotel Guangzhou
On the heels of its luxury private residences Jumeirah Living Guangzhou, in Zhujiang New Town, comes the Jumeirah Hotel Guangzhou, projected to be throwing open its doors in Tianhe District any day now. The hotel’s impeccable design combines classic luxury, Chinese heritage, luxury materials and Jumeirah’s renowned service. Comprehensive fitness and wellness facilities are complemented by creatively designed guest rooms that range from loft-style suites to duplexes recalling the refinement of the Tang Dynasty, as well as an impressive array of F&B, including Chinese, Japanese and French dining, a whisky bar and the Bar on Six, boasting a terrace that looks out over the city.
InterContinental Guangzhou Exhibition Centre
Located next to one of China and Asia’s busiest and most important convention centres, the Canton Fair Complex, the recently unveiled InterContinental Guangzhou Exhibition Centre boasts 350 luxury rooms just a few steps away in a striking silver tower. Taking its design inspiration from Guangzhou’s heritage as the start of the Maritime Silk Road, the location is perfect for fair-goers looking to unwind after a trade show at the spa, as well as leisure travellers keen to explore colonial-era Shamian Island and its European architecture, the Lingnan culture of Lychee Bay, Port of Huangpu, Pazhou Pagoda, or sample the Guangzhou Restaurant, serving up dim sum since 1935.
