6 pubs in Madrid where you can watch Liverpool vs Spurs in the Uefa Champions League final
Choose from Penalti Reina Victoria, La Fontana de Oro or four Irish drinking establishments to see the biggest club game in European soccer
Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur go head-to-head in the Uefa Champions League final this Saturday. This all-English affair, in the most prestigious competition in club soccer, takes place at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid. The home of local side Atlético Madrid, the venue has a capacity of 68,000 but tens of thousands of supporters are expected to fly to the Spanish capital without tickets for the game.
Unfortunately, the fan zones created for the occasion will not be showing the game (we are not sure why not), so anyone without a ticket will have to find a good bar with TV screens to enjoy the game. Here are our recommendations. Just remember to get there early if you want to secure a seat.
The James Joyce
Formerly the Cafe Lion, one of Madrid’s oldest and most veritable cafes, the James Joyce should have a rocking atmosphere come Saturday night. There are three big screens that will be showing the game and regulars here know their sport. If you are feeling peckish, there are not many Spanish delicacies to be had, instead, you can order up a wealth of traditional Irish plates, including everything from black pudding to a beef and Guinness pie.
Calle de Alcalá, 59, 28014 Madrid.
O’Brien
Another Irish pub, the O’Brien spans two floors of an establishment near Plaza Santa Ana. Renovated last year, the place looks spic and span. If the three screens at the James Joyce are not enough for you, the O’Brien packs a whopping 18 large televisions and two large projector screens into its premises. If you cannot make it into the Wanda Metropolitano, this is probably the next best place to catch the game.
Calle del Príncipe, 12, 28012 Madrid.
