Orlando Bloom wasn’t the first celebrity tattoo fail – Ariana Grande, Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles and 3 more A-listers who messed up an inked spelling
Everyone’s getting a tattoo these days, and with something as permanent as ink in your skin, mistakes are devastatingly noticeable. Celebrities are human, too, but their tattoo mishaps make headlines around the world. If there’s one lesson to learn from these cautionary tales, it’s to steer clear of getting your message inked in languages that neither you nor your tattoo artist are familiar with.
1. Orlando Bloom
What started out as a sweet and tasteful tattoo of his son’s name in Morse code was ruined by one missing dot. The mistake led to the tattoo reading FRYNN instead of FLYNN. Luckily it was just a dot and was easily rectified.

2. Ariana Grande
To celebrate her hit song 7 Rings, the pop singer had the Japanese characters for “seven” and “ring” tattooed to her palm. Unfortunately, those two characters combined mean Japanese barbecue grill, as fans were quick to point it out. She later tried to fix this by adding an extra character and a heart, but it just inadvertently changed the tattoo into gibberish that reads “Japanese barbecue finger”.

3. Jennifer Lawrence
J-Law apparently got this tattoo when she was hanging out with Liam Hemsworth and they decided to get inked. We know, this story is really cool already – if only the tattoo wasn’t messed up. Lawrence wanted the chemical formula for water on the back of her hand to remind herself to stay hydrated. Now, those who are familiar with the periodic table will remember that numbers are written in subscript, meaning a smaller font written below the line. But in Lawrence’s tattoo, the number 2 in H2O was inked in superscript – above the line, as in the number to the power of x in algebra. A small difference, but also a glaringly obvious fail.

4. David Beckham
Yes, even the most famous footballer on Earth gets it wrong. Back in 2000, Beckham got his wife’s name Victoria tattooed on his forearm in Hindi because it would be less tacky than in English. However, the tattoo artist added an extra “h” making the tattoo read “Vihctoria”.

5. Zoë Kravitz
The Big Little Lies star had a shoulder tattoo that was supposed to say “Let love rule” – the title of one of her father Lenny Kravitz’s songs – in Arabic, but due to bad grammar it reads “Let the love the rule”. In February 2019, it was reported she covered this up with a dragonfly.

6. Harry Styles
Here’s one that is in English. Styles wanted to ink the lyrics from Australian band The Temper Trap’s Sweet Disposition on his arm, but he did not check online before he went ahead.
The band pointed out in an interview that the lyrics are “won't stop to surrender”, but the Falling singer tattooed “won’t stop ‘till we surrender” instead. Styles has since lasered the tattoo away and covered it with new ones.
