Injury forces Korean heartthrob actor Lee Jong-suk to miss ‘active’ military service
Korean heartthrob Lee Jong-suk, who is starring in the television soap opera Romance is a Bonus Book, will take on a new role from March 8 – two years of national service.
However, a bad knee injury Lee suffered as a teenager means that rather than carrying out active military duties, he will perform an “alternative” form of military service.
His agency, A-Man Project, said that Lee, 30, would serve as a public service worker for the next two years.
“He promised he would come back after faithfully fulfilling his military duty,” a spokesman for the agency said.
Lee had been left unable to carry out active duties because he suffered anterior cruciate ligament damage in a traffic accident when he was 16, the agency said.
He will complete his last day of filming on the 16-episode Romance is a Bonus Book this week, with the other cast members finishing work on the series by March.
Lee debuted as a runway model in 2005 and began forging an acting career after appearing in the 2010 TV series Princess Prosecutor.
Thanks to the success of shows, including I Can Hear Your Voice, he has become a leading “hallyu” or Korean wave star.
