Joining the five other timepiece mainstays, the Odysseus is the first stainless steel watch collection from the Saxon watchmaker

Saxon watchmaker A. Lange & Söhne today (October 24, 2019) unveiled the first novelty of a new watch family, Odysseus, marking its sixth collection of novelties and its first stainless steel one. The new Odysseus will join the other five mainstays of the Lange family: the Lange 1, Saxonia, 1815, Richard Lange and Zeitwerk.

A. Lange & Söhne rarely uses stainless steel for its timepieces, usually only for special editions. These watches are often in high demand from collectors and are auction favourites. Last year, the A. Lange & Söhne stainless steel 1815 “Homage to Walter Lange” sold for US$852,525 at a Phillips auction.

The new sporty yet elegant Odysseus timepiece will be the first of the regularly-produced collection in stainless steel by the Glashütte-based watchmakers and is made for watch aficionados who live active lives. It comes in a 40.5mm case with an integrated steel bracelet, and is the first Lange watch with a water resistant case (up to 12 bar) and screw-down crown.

A safety deployant buckle adds to the ease of adjusting the length of the bracelet for up to an extra 7mm. By pressing the pusher embossed with the Lange signature, the bracelet can be pulled or pushed to adjust the desired length; further length can be added with extra links.

The watch sports the brand’s iconic large counters for day and date.

The timepiece sports a blue three-dimensional dial made of brass and has several levels with different surfaces. A bevelled, argenté-coloured flange ring with a printed minute scale frames the dial with the number 60 printed in red at 12 o'clock. A seconds subdial sits at 6 o’clock with Lange’s iconic large counters for day and date sitting at 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock, respectively. The curved A. Lange & Söhne logo sits at 12 o’clock together with the words Glashütte 1/SA and Automatic.

The Odysseus houses a new L155.1 Datomatic manufacture calibre. The name Datomatic is visible on the rotor stands for the date mechanism combined with automatic winding. When fully wound, the watch offers a maximum power reserve of 50 hours.
