Real learning, real returns

China’s economic growth and integration into the world economy has created multiple business opportunities, but it remains essential that companies and their managers gain an in-depth knowledge of the mainland’s unique business and cultural environment.
“In addition to legal, financial, marketing and other business areas, our Master of Science China Business programme places emphasis on local and multi-cultural knowledge and the real insights of ‘doing’ business in China,” says Dr Lu Hai-tian, director of the China Business Studies Programme (CBSP) at the Polytechnic University (PolyU). “Ours is a programme truly dedicated to China, designed to provide students with a multi-dimensional understanding of China business.”
Lu says that cross-cultural understanding also plays a major part in achieving mainland business success. “Recent changes in the Chinese leadership, initiatives to lift mainland consumer consumption and rapid development in second- and third-tier cities are each creating its own challenges and opportunities,” Lu says.
He adds that PolyU CBSP makes sense of these developments by constantly fine-tuning the programme content.
Previously offered as a full-time and part-time programme, the CBSP will be available only as a one-year full-time programme from next year. Targeted students include fresh graduates with little or no China business experience, individuals who can take a year-long break from their employment, and non-local mainland and overseas students. Reflecting the multi-disciplinary structure of the CBSP, the programme is jointly offered by the PolyU Faculty of Business and supported by the Faculty of Humanities.
“With more businesses from the West migrating to China and business opportunities opening up in second- and third-tier cities, now is a good time to upgrade and retool China business knowledge,” Lu says, adding that the CBSP can help participants become more competitive in the job market.
Reinforcing the mainland focus, a significant feature of the CBSP is a three-week China immersion study tour, enabling students to meet with regional government officials and large local enterprises to see and experience the real business environment.
