Hong Kong issues T3 typhoon warning signal at 2.40am on Sunday
Tropical cyclone will intensify progressively and skirt around 200km to the southwest of Hong Kong on Monday morning, forecaster says
Hong Kong’s weather forecaster issued the No 3 typhoon warning signal at 2.40am on Sunday, with strong winds expected to affect the vicinity of the Pearl River Delta and enter within 200km (125 miles) of the city on Monday.
A tropical cyclone over the northern part of the South China Sea would intensify gradually and edge closer to the western coast of Guangdong, the Observatory said on Saturday. It raised the No 1 signal at 10.20pm on Friday.
Tropical Storm Tapah had moved west-northwest steadily with its outer rainbands also edging closer to the coast of Guangdong, the Observatory said on Saturday.
“The tropical cyclone will intensify progressively and skirt around 200km to the southwest of Hong Kong on Monday morning,” it said.
“However, its circulation will be relatively small. Depending on the rate of intensification and its closest distance to Hong Kong, the Observatory will assess the need to issue higher tropical cyclone warning signals on [Sunday] night.”
