Thirteen luxury car owners from Hong Kong were arrested on the mainland after reaching speeds of up to 251km/h in an illegal race on the highway connecting Shenzhen and Guangzhou, local media said.
The suspects, all permanent Hong Kong residents, are aged between 38 and 62 years old and were driving sports cars from manufacturers including McLaren, Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche, reported.
Local police said the suspects were racing on the S3 highway last week at an average speed of 214km/h – hitting a top speed of 251km/h – citing data collected by CCTV and speed recorders found on the vehicles.
The expressway, which runs along the coast of the Pearl River estuary, has a speed limit of 100km/h.
Shenzhen police called it the biggest street racing case ever seen in the city in terms of “scale, number of vehicles involved, and potential dangers”.
The drivers said they had decided to race in Shenzhen because Hong Kong’s roads are narrow and the city hands out severe punishment for street racing, according to one report.
