'Panda porn' pays off for novice Chengdu lover as animals mate

Cheers erupted at the Chengdu Research Base for Giant Panda Breeding on Sunday evening after "Colin", a shy five-year-old female panda, finally mated with male companion "Yongyong."
Scientists at the base said they were impressed Colin had finally mastered the right "technique" after watching a "panda porn" video. This was used to help educate her on how to breed, reported Xinhua.

Initially on Sunday, Colin appeared clueless and unenthusiastic. When the more exprienced Yongyong tried to climb onto her back to "have his way", she continuouly fought him off.

Researchers were worried Colin would miss her annual estrous cycle which only lasts for three days. The estrous cycle is the changes which occur during the "breeding season" of most female mammals.

So the researchers decided to play Colin the video. She watched it "with great interest", one scientist said. Colin attentively studied the video standing up, then lying on the floor - without turning away. After watching it, Colin proved to be quick learner.

This was the first time the centre used video training to help a female panda, researchers said.

Spring is the season when pandas experience their only estrous cycle of the year. Captive-bred pandas tend to be pampered and less physically active. This often make breeding difficult, researchers explained.

Staff at Hong Kong’s Ocean Park are trying find ways to get local panda Ying Ying to conceive. They might now get some inspiration from Colin.
