11 children killed as overcrowded minibus and truck collide in Shandong

Kindergarten pupils’ deaths in Shandong the latest in a string of fatalities resulting from widespread school transport safety breaches

Eleven nursery school children packed into a minibus were killed when it collided with a truck in Shandong province yesterday, state media reported.

The driver of the minibus was also killed, The Beijing News reported.

Two other children were seriously hurt while another sustained minor injuries.

The crash happened at about 8am as the minibus - which Xinhua reported was designed to carry just eight passengers - was taking the children to a kindergarten in Chaoshui township, near the city of Penglai .

Three children and the driver died at the scene. The other eight children killed were pronounced dead after being taken to hospitals in the area.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

It is common to see school buses crammed with children in rural areas of the mainland, a practice that has been linked to a spate of accidents in recent years.
