The deputy chief at the State Administration for Industry and Commerce is under investigation for alleged corruption.
Sun Hongzhi, 49, is to be questioned over “suspected serious violations of party discipline and law”, according to a brief statement released by the government’s anti-graft watchdog.
A violation of discipline is a form of words often used by the authorities in China to described alleged graft.
No further details were given.
Sun joined the government industry and commerce department in 2011.
He was deputy Communist Party secretary in Songyuan in Jilin province in northeast China from 2006 to 2010.
He also has extensive experience in the coal industry.
