China urges Brazil to step up protection for diplomatic buildings after attack on Rio consulate
- Embassy asks the Brazilian authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure there is no repeat
- Police are still searching for the man who threw a device at the consulate on Thursday, damaging the building but causing no injuries
The device damaged the premises but no one was injured in Thursday evening’s attack, the consulate said in a statement.
Qu Yuhui, a minister counsellor from the Chinese embassy in Brasília, has raised the issue with the Brazilian foreign ministry.
“Minister Counsellor Qu severely condemns this violent incident and is communicating with Brazilian authorities, urging them to investigate the case immediately, and hopes they will adopt measures to prevent the occurrence of similar attacks,” a statement from the embassy said.
According to the Chinese embassy, Brazilian foreign affairs officials are devoting their attention to the attack and have pledged to work with other Brazilian authorities to protect Chinese diplomats as well as Chinese institutions and citizens in the country.
Surveillance footage showed a man, wearing a hat and a face mask and dressed in a black coat, walking towards the Rio consulate.
