Ticket scalpers outside Shanghai Disneyland were only charging 500 yuan (HK$ 588) a ticket on Friday – just one yuan more than the official price – as demand dropped after the theme park’s website released more tickets.

Why is there such high frequency of breakdowns?

Meanwhile, inside the park, dozens of unhappy visitors demanded their money back after a few rides malfunctioned. They gathered at the guest service centre, complaining they had waited for many hours for three top attractions only to be told something had gone wrong with the machinery and they had been shut down.

“I spent 499 yuan to buy a ticket and only played one game. I have been waiting two to three hours for each of those games. It is really a waste of my time,” said Dong Zhiwu, a Shanghai man visiting the park with seven friends. “They have undergone trial operations for some time and now it’s officially running. Why is there such high frequency of breakdowns?”

Disney staff later gave the group new tickets, valid for one visit in the next 12 months.

A Shanghai Disneyland spokesman could not be reached by phone on Friday afternoon.

An estimated 20,000 to 30,000 people visited the theme park on Friday, roughly double the number on Thursday.

Disney has launched an app that shows waiting times for each attraction at the theme park. The queuing time for the two most popular attractions – Soaring over the Horizon and TRON Lightcycle Power Run – reached 150 minutes on Friday.
