Bleeding profusely from a stab wound in his mouth, armed police officer Liu Zhijun remained undeterred from his duty, lifting his pistol and shooting dead two terror suspects even as he fell from his injuries.

Liu and his teammates had been searching for the terror suspects in Kashgar , Xinjiang , when they stumbled upon them, armed with knives and spears. His teammates succumbed to their injuries in the stand-off that ensued, and Liu, the last man standing, managed to take down the suspects before he fell.

That description was part of a report Xinhua released yesterday on the efforts of armed police in the crackdown against terror.

It came after another report made public a little-known anti-terrorism agency under the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, drawing attention to the semi-military body and its role against terror.

State media has stepped up publicity of the mainland's terrorism crackdown in the wake of the attacks in Paris, underlining Beijing's growing concern over unrest in the far western Xinjiang region.

Yesterday's report also told of armed police officer Wang Gang kicking open a door as he pursued terror suspects, only to have a grenade thrown at him. Wang swiftly kicked it away and resumed his chase as the grenade exploded near him.
