Not long now before Covid is endemic in China – just like the rest of the world, expert says

China will soon be in sync with the rest of the world as Covid-19 becomes an endemic disease, according to Shanghai infectious diseases specialist Zhang Wenhong.

“Mainland China has also entered the first wave of the peak of the pandemic. As more medical resources become available, we will transition to an endemic stage,” the prominent epidemiologist told a forum in Shanghai on Saturday.

“It is likely to … become like the flu, [and] become a seasonal epidemic.”

An endemic disease, such as flu, is a constant presence within a certain area and has a predictable pattern.

But the death toll remains unknown with Chinese authorities not reporting daily Covid cases since December 25.
