A terminally-ill cancer patient in Shenzhen is taking heavy doses of pain-killing drugs to try to stay alive until the middle of next year so his wife qualifies for a permanent residence permit in the city, according to a newspaper report.

Wu Shuliang, 39, has lung cancer and was granted his household registration in Shenzhen in June 2013 after working as a security guard.

His wife will qualify for a permit if he lives until next summer and has been resident in the city for three years, the Yancheng Evening News reported.
