Victims of a series of break-ins at flats in China were amused to find apologies written on notes left behind by the cat burglar, mainland media reports.

The culprit was later spotted after falling asleep on the 11th floor of a building in Hubei province after carrying out three break-ins in one night and caught by police six hours later after trying to escape by climbing outside, the Chutian Metropolis Daily reported on Monday.

“Please don’t blame the security guards, they have it tough, too,” said one note written by the culprit on a shoe box left inside one flat after a break-in at a gated apartment block in the city of Zaoyang.

“Nobody can do that good a job in fending off [burglars],” the note added.

“Sorry. I have taken drugs and there is no way out. I’m dying soon. Sorry, sorry, sorry.”

A second note left in another flat, written on the cover of a home appliance manual, said: “We’ve already watered your flowers”, and then added the word “sorry” three times.
