A Shanghai resident took 20,000-yuan (HK$23,195) of mouldy cash to a bank, hoping the staff could replace the damaged banknotes, the news portal chinanews.com reports.

The man said the money were stored by his father under a box in a humid room. The banknotes were not packed in bags.

Some of the notes were mildewed, some were stuck together and others were missing pieces.

Workers at the China Agriculture Bank said that most of the banknotes, with a total face value of 18,500 yuan, were convertible and they plan to send the remaining 1,500 yuan for further confirmation.
