Chinese driver weeps as villagers loot oranges after his truck overturns

A group of villagers attacked a truck driver and his nephew as they tried to stop them looting their full cargo of oranges after their vehicle overturned on a highway in eastern China.

The driver wept by the side of the road as the villagers scrambled to pick the fruit off the road, in Yichun, Jiangxi province, news portal Kankannews.com reported.

Villagers living nearby had quickly dashed to the scene after the truck spun out of control and overturned, spilling the fruit across the highway on Sunday, the report said.

The driver and his nephew, who had been transporting the oranges from Hunan province, tried to stop the villagers picking up the fruit, but were beaten up, video footage circulated online showed.

After being left powerless to prevent the looting, the driver then squatted by the side of the road and wept.

The villagers left the scene only after police officers intervened. It took the officers and the driver the entire afternoon to clean up the site.

The driver wept as he told reporters about the accident, which happened during his first long-distance trip delivering fruit.

It is not uncommon in China to see people flocking to grab goods from trucks after they have been involved in road accidents.

In August 2015, villagers in Henan province scrambled to pick up apples after 20 tonnes of the fruit fell from an overturned truck.

The looting stopped only after police detained three villagers.
