Two Indian couples tied the knot in southwest China on Thursday in a lavish joint ceremony costing 20 million yuan (US$2.9 million), according to a Chinese newspaper report.

More than 600 guests from overseas attended the event in Kunming, capital of Yunnan province, while more than 400 people were employed to stage it, including 120 cooks, the Chuncheng Evening News reported.

The huge event was paid for by Sanjay Jain, managing director of Kolkata-based property developer Siddha Group, whose son and nephew were the two grooms.

The report identified them only as Samyak and Aayushman, respectively, and did not name their brides.

Such was the high profile nature of the event for the local community that the vice-governor of Yunnan, Zhang Guohua, met Jain a few days before it took place to make sure it went smoothly, according to an article on the provincial government’s website.
