A family in eastern China is blaming motorists who clogged up an expressway emergency lane for contributing to the death of a man injured in a traffic accident last week.
Police in Luan, Anhui province, said on Thursday that they had questioned the drivers of at least three cars blocking the lane as an ambulance tried to take the injured man to hospital on the outskirts of the city last Friday night.
The traffic jam delayed the ambulance by about half an hour and the man died within hours of reaching hospital.
The incident came to light after footage of a distraught woman pleading with and kowtowing to motorists to get out of the emergency lane attracted widespread attention online.
The cars moved out of the lane only after the woman made her desperate appeal, according to footage on video website Pear Video.

Reports initially said the woman was the injured man’s mother but police later clarified that he was her father.
The woman’s daughter said the family called the ambulance after her 62-year-old grandfather was injured in a road accident near her home.
“We didn’t expect the expressway to be so badly jammed. The emergency lane was totally blocked,” Pear Video quoted the granddaughter as saying.
It took the ambulance more than half an hour to pass the blocked section of road – a trip that should have taken just five minutes if the lane was clear, the granddaughter said.
Traffic jams in Luan delayed the ambulance for another half an hour, she said.
“My grandfather died that night, perhaps because he was too seriously injured but also because he was delayed for so long before getting treatment,” she was quoted as saying.

Chinese law limits use of emergency lanes to fire trucks, ambulances, police cars and rescue vehicles.
However, the penalties for breaking the law are low and infractions are frequent.
The incident generated a storm of condemnation online.
“I feel speechless and it’s so sad!” one commenter wrote on Weibo, China’s Twitter-like microblogging service.
