Häagen-Dazs apologises after boy in China accidentally served silica gel instead of frozen yogurt
- Boy was accidentally given display model and had already eaten the nut topping before discovering the mistake

Ice cream maker Häagen-Dazs has apologised after a boy in eastern China tried to eat a display model that had been sold in error.
The incident happened at a shopping centre in Hangzhou, capital city of Zhejiang province, on Sunday, when the boy’s mother and uncle took him to visit a shopping centre and ordered a tub of frozen yogurt from one of the firm’s stores, the Qianjiang Evening News reported.
It was topped with real nuts, which the boy ate, but they only realised it was a display model when he complained that he could not scoop up the fake yogurt, which was made with silica gel.
The boy’s mother, identified only by her surname Jiang, said she found a “not for sale” label on the outside the tub.
The store’s manager, surnamed Xu, told the family that they used a model on the display shelf because yogurt did not keep for long and customers were given a freshly made product.
