More than 30 boozing secondary school students were cleared tonight from a monument erected in Causeway Bay to mark when SARS hit Hong Kong.

The teenagers’ cheers and laughs drew curious onlookers around the iconic 5 metre-tall Golden Dragon Sculpture at the junction of Leighton Road and Morrison Hill Road.

The group were heard singing choruses of Bruce Channel’s Hey Baby as they clambered over the statue at about 10.30pm on Thursday.

But the 30-minute party came to an abrupt end when a police van arrived at the scene to disperse the crowd.

The teenagers, many of whom were seen carrying beer bottles, scattered along the street as police officers surrounded the HK$250,000 statue, which was erected by Wan Chai District Council in December 2003 to commemorate the end of the SARS epidemic.
