Hong Kong Sports Commissioner Sam Wong quits 1 year into job
Wong steps down for personal reasons at time when government hopes to take sports in Hong Kong to next level

Hong Kong Sports Commissioner Sam Wong Tak-sum has announced his resignation just a year after taking up the job.
The Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau said on Thursday night Wong had asked to resign for personal reasons, and it had agreed.
Wong succeeded Yeung Tak-keung on August 22 last year and will now step down on September 20. His term was reportedly three years.
“[The bureau] would like to thank Mr Wong for his contribution towards promotion of sports policies and sports development of Hong Kong in the past year and wishes him all the best in his future endeavours and that he would continue to contribute to the sports sector of Hong Kong,” the bureau said.
Wong is a former wind surfing medallist married to Lee Lai-shan, who won Hong Kong’s first Olympic gold in the same sport.
The commissioner is one of the most senior officials responsible for sports in Hong Kong, falling under the permanent secretary for the sector, who reports to the minister.
The bureau said it would identify Wong’s successor according to established practices.
