Two boys allegedly trespassed onto MTR track near a station on Lantau Island during rush hour on Tuesday night, slowing trains and interrupting in-town check-in services for the Airport Express.

The teenagers, aged 15 and 17, were spotted by a train captain on a Hong Kong-bound Airport Express train near Siu Ho Wan, about 8km from Sunny Bay station in northern Lantau, at about 5pm. The MTR’s operation control centre was then alerted.

Trains on the Airport Express and Tung Chung Line, which run parallel to each other, were instructed to run slower.

Trains on both lines spent an extra 15 to 20 minutes making the full journey from AsiaWorld-Expo station to Hong Kong station and Tung Chung station to Hong Kong station respectively.

Intervals between trains on the Airport Express were lengthened to 15 minutes, and the frequency of services between Hong Kong station and Tsing Yi brought departures down to one every five minutes, and 10 minutes between Hong Kong station and Tung Chung.

The cut-off time for airline passengers using in-town check-in services at Hong Kong and Kowloon stations was also brought forward.
