With a full score of 45 points in the International Baccalaureate (IB), Eloise Fan was one of Hong Kong’s top performers this year.

The young student at the Canadian International School of Hong Kong (CDNIS) already has her sights set on changing the world by shaping young minds.

Fan, 17, has a lot on her plate. In addition to a packed academic schedule, she has been involved in a host of extracurricular activities such as the school’s swim team, taking part in fundraising activities to support literacy programmes in Hong Kong and abroad, and teaching foreign domestic workers, refugees, and children how to swim.

Fan, who is going to study at the school of environment, resources and sustainability at the University of Waterloo in Canada, is determined to improve the state of the environment by focusing on education at schools.

She believes raising environmental awareness in young people is the best way to bring about real change. “It is hard to change the minds of policymakers, so the best places to bring about change are schools, as they are a fundamental part of our society,” she says.
