Many top scorers in Hong Kong’s university entrance exams found a helping hand in generative artificial intelligence (AI), describing the technology as useful for enhancing their understanding of course materials if used judiciously.

At least nine out of 16 top students in this year’s Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE), including one “ultimate top scorer” who aced his seven subjects, used AI tools in their preparations, the Post found in interviews.

But while many acknowledged the usefulness of AI tools, some also warned future candidates to exercise discretion when using the software.

The English language subject was one commonly cited example in which students found AI to have been helpful.

Dennis Puk Hoi-chun of Queen’s College in Causeway Bay, who achieved perfect scores across six subjects, said AI had helped him with his English writing.

The 18-year-old said he used ChatGPT and the Chinese-developed DeepSeek, prompting the models to generate possible topics for DSE essays based on theme-based notes he had prepared.
