Hong Kong will begin the Year of Tiger next week with chilly, windy and wet weather due to a looming cold front.

The cold front is expected to move from the north across the coast of China’s southern Guangdong province between Saturday night and Sunday morning, bringing temperatures down in the region, according to Friday’s forecast from the Observatory.

At 4.20pm on Saturday, a cold weather warning was issued, meaning the minimum temperature in urban areas will be around 12 degrees Celsius, and a couple of degrees lower in the New Territories and on high ground.

With the combined effect of a winter monsoon, it will be cold, cloudy, rainy and windy over the coast of southern China on Lunar New Year’s Eve on Monday and for several days after.

“Without much sunshine during the day, you may feel rather cold, be prepared to wrap up warm for Lunar New Year,” said Kok Mang-Hin, the Observatory’s acting senior scientific officer.

The weekend is expected to be mostly cloudy, with patches of rain during the night. Temperatures on Sunday will range between 12 and 16 degrees Celsius (53.6 and 60.8 Fahrenheit) with moderate east to north-easterly winds.
