Hong Kong cancels all typhoon warning signals as Chaba weakens

  • Search still on for 27 members of a 30-strong crew after engineering vessel snapped in two on Saturday amid foul weather
  • Members of public advised to stay away from shoreline and not to engage in water sports

Hong Kong has cancelled all typhoon warning signals as Typhoon Chaba continued to move inland and weaken.

The Observatory cancelled its No 1 standby signal at 7.40pm on Sunday after downgrading its warning from No 3 in the morning.

“Strong winds will affect offshore areas and high ground occasionally. The outer rain bands associated with Chaba will also bring showers and squalls,” it said earlier. “When Chaba no longer poses a threat to Hong Kong, the Observatory will cancel all tropical cyclone warning signals.

“Seas remain rough with swells. Members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.”

The Social Welfare Department also advised members of the public not to take their children or family members to centres providing after-school care programmes or elderly services.

Amid the unstable weather on Saturday, “Fujing001”, a mainland China-registered engineering vessel, snapped in two after being pummelled by strong waves off the city’s coast, with the status of 27 of its 30-strong crew unclear.

Hong Kong’s Government Flying Service, which pulled three seamen to safety on Saturday, is continuing with its rescue mission.

Post
