The Hong Kong Observatory will issue the No 3 typhoon warning signal between 10am and noon on Monday, with Nesat intensifying in the past few hours.

Typhoon Nesat is expected to be closest to the city during the day, according to the weather forecaster.

“Under the combined effect of Nesat and the northeast monsoon, winds generally over Hong Kong are expected to strengthen gradually,” the Observatory added, warning there would be swells at sea and advising members of the public to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

The No 1 standby warning, issued at 9.20pm on Sunday and meaning a tropical cyclone is centred about 800km from Hong Kong, will remain in force before 10am on Monday.
