The Hong Kong Observatory issued a cold weather warning on Sunday afternoon as a chilly front drifted across the Guangdong coast, with temperatures expected to dip to 11 degrees Celsius (52 degrees Fahrenheit) in urban areas.
The warning, the first of the year, was issued at 4.20pm, as minimum temperatures in urban areas on Monday morning were expected to drop to about 11 degrees and a few degrees lower in the New Territories.

The daily high for Monday will be about 15 degrees.
Temperatures on Tuesday were expected to range from 11 to 16 degrees.

The drop in temperature was caused by a cold front that moved across the Guangdong coast early on Sunday.
The Observatory said it expected the winter monsoon would bring the coldest days this week on Monday and Tuesday.

But temperatures were predicted to go up again from Wednesday. The weather is expected to gradually become dry and fine under the monsoon.
The Observatory said the weather for the Lunar New Year holiday would be sunny on the first two days, with temperatures ranging from 15 to 19 degrees next Sunday, the start of the festivities.
