Hong Kong will experience a full week of showers and hot weather as a result of a tropical disturbance and southwesterly airstream over southern China, the Observatory has said.

The weather forecaster on Thursday predicted rain for the next nine days, coinciding with a series of activities to mark the 26th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to Chinese rule on Saturday.

Some of the perks and activities include free rides on ferries and trams, admission to major museums, as well as shopping discounts.

The Observatory also predicted the temperature over the next nine days would range from 27 to 32 degrees Celsius (80 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit).

The tropical disturbance over the northeastern part of the South China Sea would edge closer to the coastal areas of eastern Guangdong, bringing showers and thunderstorms to the region.

Observatory scientific officer Lo Ka-wai said the weather pattern was “expected to move slowly towards the eastern coast of Guangdong and gradually weaken”.

The forecaster added the disturbance was expected to skirt more than 150km to the east of the Pearl River Delta on Thursday and remain relatively weak or further lose its strength.

“Under the influence of a broad trough of low pressure, the weather is expected to be unsettled over the coast of Guangdong during the weekend and early next week,” it added.

“A southwesterly airstream will bring showers and hot weather to the coastal areas of southern China in the middle and latter parts of next week.”

The weather is expected to be hot with sunny periods and a few showers in the next few days, with isolated thunderstorms over the weekend.
