A Hong Kong district councillor has been charged with assaulting a policeman during last year’s social unrest after she was accused of filming the officer secretly on the street.

Jocelyn Chau Hui-yan, an Eastern District Council member, stood trial alongside student Lao Chak-kin at Eastern Court for allegedly attacking Constable Hui King-yiu in North Point on the night of August 11, 2019, when they were live-streaming people gathering at King’s Road after an anti-government rally on Hong Kong Island.

At Tuesday’s trial, the policeman testified that Chau and Lao, both 23, shoved him after he tried to persuade them to leave, fearing they might come into conflict with other people at the scene.

But video footage played in court suggested otherwise, as Hui was seen reaching out for Chau’s mobile phone, after Hui’s senior – an inspector – accused the pair of discreetly taking a video of them patrolling in the area.

The defence counsel denied the assault, and instead accused the policeman of abusing his powers in intercepting the two, even though he knew taking pictures of officers did not constitute a crime.
