A Hong Kong student has been arrested on suspicion of assault and disorderly conduct after an unknown powder was thrown at security guards at Chinese University’s main entrance.
Police and firefighters were called to the campus near the University railway station in Sha Tin shortly after 12.30pm on Monday, when at least seven black-clad and masked people charged the security barrier at the guard post there.
“The gang knocked down railings and threw an unknown white powder over security guards before fleeing in different directions,” a police source said.
The staff caught one of the assailants after a brief chase, while the others got away on foot.
“Initial investigation shows the suspect is a Chinese University student,” the source said. “But no student card was found on him and he refused to answer any questions.”

The suspect, thought to be aged around 20, was handed to officers as they arrived on the scene. He was arrested on suspicion of disorderly behaviour in a public place and assault.
A police spokeswoman said one of the guards complained of feeling unwell after coming into contact with the powder. He was taken to Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin for treatment.
