Hong Kong police have arrested a subcontractor working at a hotel construction site in a bustling shopping district after three people were injured by falling glass fragments.
The incident took place at around 2.24pm on Tuesday at the site of the former Mariners’ Club on Minden Row in Tsim Sha Tsui, leaving bits of broken glass scattered across the area.
A police source said a worker at the scene was lifting a glass panel, about 1.5 to two metres in length, when a gust of wind knocked it against the building’s external wall and caused it to shatter.
According to the force, two men and a woman suffered minor injuries and were sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei for treatment. Two of them were tourists from Singapore and Malaysia.

Police also arrested the subcontractor, a 58-year-old man, on suspicion of allowing an object to fall from height. Officers cordoned off the area as a safety measure.
The site of the Mariners’ Club, which opened in 1967 to local and visiting sailors, was earmarked for redevelopment after the old venue was demolished in 2018.
