A Hong Kong aviation worker and his Thai companion have been detained in Taiwan after they allegedly tried to smuggle US$2.8 million worth of marijuana in their luggage as they transited through an airport on the island.

The Taiwanese Aviation Police Bureau said on Wednesday that it and Taipei customs had cracked a drug-smuggling case in which two suspects attempted to transport around 45kg of the illegal drug from Thailand in their checked-in luggage in April.

The pair, who were in transit to Hong Kong from Bangkok, were intercepted by customs officers at Taoyuan airport, which serves Taipei and northern Taiwan.

According to the bureau, officers found 22.65kg of marijuana in the luggage of a 24-year-old Hong Kong man and in that of his companion, a 62-year-old Thai woman living in Hong Kong, after their flight from Bangkok landed in Taipei for transit.
