Wan Chai police sergeant sought over HK$1m bail money theft
Investigation launched after acting station sergeant allegedly emptied station’s safe containing HK$1.07m.

A manhunt was underway on Monday for a police sergeant suspected of stealing more than HK$1 million in bail money while on duty at Wan Chai Police Station.
The acting station sergeant, 43, suspected of the theft, the largest of its kind on record, was responsible for running the Arsenal Street station’s report room.
He reported for duty at about 7am yesterday, but he told his colleagues he needed to leave for a while at about 11am, a police source told South China Morning Post.
The officer, who was in charge of the safe for the report room, also told his colleagues where he had left the safe key, which was not standard procedure.
He changed back to his own clothes and returned his gun before leaving.
The safe, which contained HK$1.07 million in bail money, was later found empty.
