Hong Kong boy cheats death after collision involving taxi during rainstorm

Child is thrown 10 metres in a stroller as grandmother rushes to save him; taxi driver is arrested for dangerous driving

A three-year-old boy cheated death with his grandmother on Tuesday night when a taxi ran into a baby stroller carrying him at a busy traffic junction in Cheung Sha Wan during a rainstorm.

A viral video taken by a camera inside a car showed the taxi jumping a traffic light and hitting the pair, who were crossing the road on a green light.

The force of the collision threw the stroller about 10 metres before the vehicle hit roadside railings at the junction of Cheung Sha Wan Road and Tai Nan West Street shortly before 6pm, when it was raining heavily and 10 minutes before an amber storm warning was issued.

One passer-by who was lucky to escape the collision walked past without offering help.

The 58-year-old grandmother managed to get up immediately and stumbled to her grandson.

The pair was taken to Caritas Medical Centre. They were discharged after treatment for minor injuries.

The driver was later arrested for dangerous driving. He passed a breathalyser test.

The video taker, Patrick Yuen, said on his Facebook page, where he uploaded the clip, that he had visited the pair in the hospital.

“The grandmother and the baby were fine. I’m just doing what a citizen is supposed to do. I will go to the police station on Monday to make another statement,” he said.
