Protesters gathered in various locations across Hong Kong on Sunday to mourn the death of a university student who fell from a car park floor in unexplained circumstances near a police dispersal operation.
Messages had been circulating online, calling for people to gather at shopping malls in places such as Central, Tuen Mun, Sha Tin, Tseung Kwan O, Tsuen Wan, Causeway Bay and Kowloon Tong at 2pm. A prayer meeting was also set to take place at Chater Garden in Central at 7pm, led by Reverend Chu Yiu-ming and Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Ha Chi-shing.
The actions came a day after thousands flooded Tamar Park on Saturday night for a peaceful vigil to mourn the death of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology student Chow Tsz-lok.
There were also calls on the internet for a general strike and class boycott on Monday, with protesters planning to disrupt MTR stations and block highways from 7am.

Following a relatively peaceful Saturday where an approved rally finished without major unrest, protesters are now gathering at various locations across Hong Kong in small groups. 
More than 10 black-clad protesters are spotted at On Ting light rail stop, setting up roadblocks. 


In Tuen Mun Town Hall, a young man in black is taken away by police. Officers decline to explain why he is being detained. Dozens of angry people gather round, heckling police and chanting slogans calling for the force to be disbanded. 
Over at Times Square in Causeway Bay, a handful of black-clad protesters have gathered and started shouting slogans, with more than 100 shoppers and onlookers around them. Some in the crowd join in. A woman is arrested and searched. A convoy of police vehicles then arrive, to much heckling from people. Riot police emerge and patrol the area.

In On Ting Estate in Tuen Mun, some protesters have brought a box of live cockroaches. It is unclear what they intend to do with the prop, but police have constantly referred to protesters as “cockroaches” in verbal crossfires.

In Tuen Mun, a few dozen people have gathered near the town hall. Some of them call officers “rapists”. 
An officer says through a loudspeaker that accusations need to be based on facts, and that their allegations are groundless. He says such words only incite anger and disrupt public order, leaving police no choice but to make arrests.

In Sha Tin, the MTR station and some shops have been vandalised. In Tseung Kwan O and Tai Po, riot police have been spotted. Some people are being subdued outside Tsuen Wan MTR station. At Festival Walk in Kowloon Tong, people are gathering. Over in Tuen Mun, protesters have set up roadblocks. In Causeway Bay, crowds are shouting at police.

At Festival Walk in Kowloon Tong, riot police are standing by outside the mall, and at the MTR station. It is unclear who among the crowd are protesters and whether the others are just onlookers, but there are at least 100 people in black.

The MTR Corporation has announced the suspension of Light Rail route 706 in Tin Shui Wai due to “ongoing public events” in the area.

Dozens of riot police enter Siu Lun court, where protesters have been arrested, one of whom was suspected of throwing a petrol bomb.
At least one person is held and escorted to a police van.
Scores of residents become angry and surround police, shouting abuse at them.
“This is a private place, how dare you enter,” someone shouted. Within 10 minutes, police left near the junction of Hoi Wing Road and Tuen Mun Heung Sze Wui Road.

Police are challenged why they are taking the arrested man to the police van.
An officer replies: “This is a rioter! He threw a petrol bomb.”
During the police retreat, a riot officer points his gun at the upper floors of a tower block, from where residents had been hurling abuse.
What appeared to be a liquid, possibly water, was thrown from above.

Light Rail routes 705, 706 and 761P in Tin Shui Wai or between Tin Shui Wai and Yuen Long have been suspended. Temporary diversions are in place for route 751, which will now only run in 18- to 25-minute intervals between Yau Oi and Hung Shui Kiu stations.

Among those who have taken to the streets of Tuen Mun is Lam, 21, who is outraged by comments from an officer suggesting the death of a university student would be celebrated.
Lam, an NGO worker, is saddened by the death of Chow Tsz-lok, who reportedly fell from the third floor to the second of a car park in Tsuen Kwan O, while police carried out a dispersal operation nearby with rounds of tear gas fired. 
Earlier this week, an officer reportedly told protesters in Tuen Mun that he was “opening a bottle of champagne to celebrate”.
Lam accused the officer of having no conscience. “We must continue to come out and make our voices heard,” Lam says, adding: The fight must go on”

At Sogo in Causeway Bay, a masked group moving around the department store shouts protest slogans such as: “Five demands, not one less.”
A commotion breaks out as the masked “shoppers” say a woman disguised as a sales staff had tried to steal a man’s mobile phone. Disputes arise with shoppers demanding an explanation from security, who are blamed for allowing the woman to leave. 
Sogo then announces a temporary closure of its fourth floor, shocking some shoppers who hastily leave. Riot police remain on the ground floor.

At New Town Plaza in Sha Tin, a flashpoint and regular gathering place for protesters, mall management has announced the closure of the place due to an “emergency”. A brawl has erupted in Festival Walk in Kowloon Tong with three baton-holding men subduing a black-clad individual. The trio are in civilian clothing and it is unclear if they are undercover officers. The crowd is demanding that the men with batons show their warrant cards.

A black flag warning that tear gas will be fired if protesters do not disperse is raised on the footbridge linking Tsuen Wan City Hall and shopping mall City Walk.
It comes after a group of senior citizens arrived at the scene trying to act as mediators between protesters and officers to reduce tensions.

Tuen Mun flares up again as roadblocks set

A black-clad man is subdued by riot police in Festival Walk in Kowloon Tong. He is bleeding heavily from his forehead, leaving blood smeared on the floor.
It is unclear how he was injured, but a glass bottle was thrown while the protester was being taken down. It took at least six officers to subdue him.
At least two have been arrested during this episode of violence. One of those held is the injured man.
A fight broke out on the second floor of the shopping centre earlier after protesters confronted who they thought were undercover police, posing as demonstrators.
Several men with batons were locked in a fight with protesters, who were attacking them with umbrellas and other objects. 
Protesters were vandalising Sen-Ryo, a Japanese restaurant under Maxim’s group, when the undercover officers started making arrests.
Businesses under catering giant Maxim’s Group have been repeatedly targeted by violent demonstrators following comments by the founder’s daughter criticising the demonstrators. 

At least two people believed to be undercover police have suffered injuries. One is seen bleeding from and around his eye.
Several smaller altercations break out between riot police and protesters.
About 150 people are in the mall, many of whom are shouting abuse at police.

Some 30 riot police and more than 10 elite tactical squad officers, also known as the raptors, arrive at the junction of Heung Sze Wui Road and Ho Pong Road where protesters have set up roadblocks. 
The group of protesters appear ready to leave. Onlookers heckle police, asking them to also leave.

Police urge people to leave the mall, but some criticise officers for bringing weapons onto the premises. The top floor of the mall is now empty and occupied by police looking down at bystanders, who hurl abuse. 
The bleeding protesters is still receiving medical attention on the floor.

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has announced that due to special circumstances, the tennis courts of Sha Tsui Road Playground and Tsuen Wan Town Hall are closed; and Sha Tin Town Hall will be closed at 5pm to ensure the safety of venue users.

In a statement, police have condemned protesters, accusing them of loitering in several malls, vandalising shops and facilities, and neglecting the safety of the public. 
The force says radical protesters have smashed the glass at a restaurant in New Town Plaza in Sha Tin, and spray-painted glass panels of shops at Festival Walk in Kowloon Tong. Police say protesters also stormed shops at Citywalk in Tsuen Wan and “pushed tables and chairs onto the floor, spray-painting them”. 
“Members of the public in these areas are advised to mind their own safety and stay tuned to police’s announcements and updates on social media,” the statement reads.

Almost all of the shops inside the Citywalk shopping centre in Tsuen Wan are closed.
Protesters have vandalised the Starbucks inside.
The coffee chain, operated by Maxim’s in Hong Kong, has become the target of vandalism after Beijing-friendly businesswoman Annie Wu Suk-ching, the daughter of the catering giant’s co-founder, spoke out against the protesters in a United Nations meeting.
The Teawood restaurant inside the Citywalk mall has also been targeted. Furniture inside the eatery is being used to stop police entering the shopping centre.
Outside the Citywalk, riot police are pointing crowd control guns at people on the footbridge.
Police earlier raised black flags there warning of tear gas as they faced-off with protesters.

A stand-off erupts on the footbridge connecting Tsuen Wan City Hall and Citywalk mall as protesters keep calling officers “rapists”.  Several police officers on the ground level are also seen pointing their crowd-control guns at protesters on the footbridge. White smoke is seen on the road but it is unclear who caused it. 
This comes a day after a teenager’s claim that she was gang-raped in Tsuen Wan Police Station and had an abortion on Friday. Confirming they have received a report filed by her lawyer, police said on Saturday that they were looking into the serious allegation but that their initial findings did not match the accusation.

Some 30 riot police are facing down a group of about 100 residents and protesters in Tuen Mun Heng Sze Wui Road, near V City shopping centre.
The crowd is shouting abuse after at least three people were held by officers near San Hui market in Tuen Mun.
Officers raised blue flags twice at the crowd, which is about 100 metres away from the police line, demanding they disperse immediately.
  
Earlier, when police were in retreat, unidentified objects were lobbed at police from above, who in return pointed a crowd control gun towards those on the footbridge.

The MTR has announced the suspension of bus routes K73 and K76 to ensure the safety of passengers and staff, as it says its vehicles have been vandalised by “rioters”.

Protesters regroup at Hysan Place, chant slogans

The MTR has announced that Ma On Shan station is closed due to safety concerns. So far two stations have been shut down today. The other is Sha Tin, which closed at 3pm.

Police used pepper spray during the chaos at at Tuen Mun Heng Sze Wui Road. First-aiders are helping those who came into contact with the liquid, which causes burning sensations and can lead to temporary blindness.

On the same street, a young man carrying a guitar case is arrested after he showed his middle finger to officers.
Police warned him to stop and moved in when he refused. 
The man shouts his name and that he is a philosophy student at Chinese University.

Hundreds of Hongkongers have gathered early at Chater Garden in Central for a prayer meeting to mourn the death of university student Chow Tsz-lok, who fell from a car park floor near a police dispersal operation on Monday.
“There are still too many things unexplained in the incident,” says a woman, 55, who only gave her surname as Chow. She is here with her husband, 63. She accuses police of changing their account of what happened. “We are not clear what to believe any more. We demand explanations.

In Tuen Mun, a large group of protesters have occupied a road junction near V City. They build roadblocks using barricades and other items, including dismantled road railings, after police leave. 

Meanwhile in Central, about 1,000 people have gathered in Chater Garden for a prayer session to mourn a student’s death, which has become the latest lightning rod for anger among protesters.

Chater Garden in Central is fully packed with more than 1,000 people gathered for a prayer meeting to pay respects to student Chow Tsz-lok.
The session begins with a minute of silence, followed by people singing hymns. Participants then pay tribute to Chow with some bearing white flowers. 
Ivan Ho, 26, is at the venue alone, and says the past week has been overwhelming for him. He has come here for a moment of silence and peace. 
“I get emotional when I read the news, Chow is so young,” he says, as he demands a thorough investigation into the actions of police, who have been blamed for Chow’s death although exact circumstances remain unclear. 
“People like me, in their 20s, are seen as criminals or protesters by police now. You feel worried simply just going out onto the streets.”

In a statement, broadcaster Now TV expresses regret over police’s clearance action in Tsuen Wan in the afternoon, where one of its reporters was injured. 
The station says video footage shows an officer firing tear gas rounds from a police van without prior warning, at people and journalists on a footbridge. A canister had hit the arm of a Now TV reporter, who was sent to Yan Chai Hospital for treatment. 
“Police officers have neglected people’s safety,” the statement reads. “We ... will reserve our rights to pursue the case.”

At the Chater Garden prayer gathering in Central, Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Ha Chi-shing says he feels saddened and brokenhearted over Chow’s death.
“Why would he fall from the car park? Are there any delays in the rescue process? The facts are still not clear and not open,” Ha says. “This is not acceptable in any civilised society.
“We hope the Coroner’s Court will look into Chow’s case as soon as possible. And we demand that the government start an independent inquiry into the protests now,” Ha adds, while citing comments by an international expert panel noting that the city’s police watchdog lacks the powers and resources to meet the demands of its investigations. 
“May you rest in peace,” Ha concludes.
Reverend Yuen Tin-yau who also speaks on the stage, blames the government for being “numbed and unresponsive”.
“But we should not let hatred and anger conquer us. We should pray for Chow’s family and Tsz-lok,” he says.

Dozens of riot police officers have just arrived outside Citywalk mall in Tsuen Wan as a group of protesters declines to leave. They yell abuse at the officers, who respond by shining bright lights at them. 
“You are taking part in an unauthorised assembly. Leave immediately or we will use appropriate force to disperse you,” an officer warns through a loudspeaker.

More tear gas fired as police advance in Tsuen Wan

About 100 officers march to Sheung Chui Court residential estate in Tsuen Wan after firing volleys of tear gas at crowds. 
Residents there shout from their flats that police are not welcome and should leave immediately. Officers then board several vehicles and leave.

First aid volunteers in Tsuen Wan are treating a boy who is suffering from the effects of tear gas fired earlier on Sha Tsui Road.

Police officers are seen entering a McDonald’s restaurant on Sha Tsui Road in Tsuen Wan.
According to a Kwai Tsing district councillor, who says he was a witness at the scene, officers chased protesters into the outlet. A manager at the branch did not want to let police in, and the staff member was taken away by them. Officers were seen checking the belongings of some people inside the restaurant. 
A man, surnamed Kwok, 40, says he was eating inside McDonald’s when more than 10 officers entered and started searching people’s bags and asking for their ID cards. Another young man was seen being taken away by officers, Kwok adds.
“I overheard the staff telling each other that a manager was arrested on suspicion of obstructing officers in the execution of their duties,” Kwok says. 
“It’s unreasonable. What proof do they have that some protesters have entered?”

A water cannon fired for the second time on Nathan Road in Mong Kok, covering sidewalks with pepper spray-laced solution. Many people cough and vomit from the effects of the irritant.

Over in Central, most attendees have left the prayer session in Chater Garden. Some protesters at the event earlier chanted: “Hongkongers, seek revenge!”
Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Ha Chi-shing tells the media after the session that he understands people are emotional, but it is very dangerous to think of revenge.
“We don’t accept ways that are against justice to achieve justice,” Ha says. “We shouldn’t do things that are opposite to what we want to achieve. At this moment we should first seek the truth, then we should let the judiciary system punish whoever was wrong.”


‘Dangerous to think of revenge’

Riot police have arrived outside a car park in Sheung Tak Estate in Tseung Kwan O, where student Chow Tsz-lok, 22, was reported to have fallen on Monday, near police dispersal operations. He suffered severe injury to his brain and died four days later, sparking citywide anger. Police have been blamed for his death, although exact circumstances of his fall remain unclear. 
Police clear barricades on roads in the area, raising the blue flag at crowds who have gathered there, warning them of an illegal assembly. The car park has become a makeshift memorial site for Chow, with many supporters placing flowers and paper cranes as they come to pay their respects.
