As of Wednesday, the Working Family Allowance Office had received 2.6 million applications for the Caring and Sharing Scheme, a government spokesman said on Thursday.

Some 1.5 million acknowledgements had been issued to applicants.

Hong Kong’s population was 7.5 million last year, according to the latest figure from the Census and Statistics Department.

Under the scheme, Hong Kong residents aged 18 or above will get up to HK$4,000 (US$510) if they do not own property or benefit from government allowances.

Those with tax breaks will get the difference between HK$4,000 and the concessionary amount.

The cash handout was not originally part of the government’s budget last year. It was announced last March after the administration came under enormous pressure to share its wealth with residents.
