Hong Kong driver arrested after three-car smash leaves 2 dead and 5 injured

  • Lamborghini, Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic collide at notorious accident black spot
  • Civic motorist detained on suspicion of dangerous driving after incident that left Lamborghini and Corolla drivers dead

Two motorists were killed and five people injured – one critically – when a Lamborghini and two other cars crashed on a northern Hong Kong road on Sunday night.

Police arrested a third driver on suspicion of dangerous driving after the crash near a popular barbecue area on Bride’s Pool Road in Tai Po, a notorious black spot for traffic accidents.

According to police, the high-performance sports car, which was being driven by a 41-year-old businessman, was travelling uphill heading towards Tai Po while a Toyota Corolla, a Honda Civic and a motorcycle were coming in the opposite direction towards Sha Tau Kok shortly before 10.15pm.

“An initial investigation suggested the Corolla lost control and crossed the opposite lane and slammed into the Lamborghini,” a police source said. “The Corolla shot into the air, landed on the Civic and then bounced forward before it turned upside down and came to a stop.”

The 25-year-old motorcyclist was unable to avoid the crash and suffered minor injuries as a result.

Police said the driver of the Lamborghini, a 41-year-old who owned a garment factory, was trapped and had to be freed by firefighters. He was certified dead at the scene.

The man driving the Corolla, and his female passenger were pulled unconscious from the vehicle by firefighters.

Officials said the 20-year-old driver was taken to Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital where he was certified dead at 11.25pm. His passenger, 24, was listed as being in a critical condition in Prince of Wales Hospital.

The 23-year-old driver of the Civic, his two passengers – a man, 25, and woman, 24 – were also injured. The woman was in a serious condition and the driver was in a stable condition in Prince of Wales Hospital, while the 25-year-old man was in a stable condition in North District Hospital.

Police arrested the man behind the wheel of the Civic for dangerous driving.

An image widely circulating online showed the Lamborghini Huracán Performante, worth an estimated HK$5 million (US$642,650), reduced to a crumpled heap of jagged metal.

The Corolla car was upside down, emitting smoke at one point.

Police have appealed for witnesses, or anyone with information about the incident, to contact officers on 3661 0800. The special investigation team of the New Territories North traffic unit is handling the case.

The fatal crash was one of several in Hong Kong on Sunday.

At about 1pm, a 51-year-old woman was hit by a car when she was crossing Shek O Road in Chai Wan and later pronounced dead.
