Hong Kong swimmer and fisherman drown in 2 separate incidents in Sai Kung
- Man, 67, found unconscious on beach after going missing while swimming around boat
- Fisherman, 68, drowns while trying to recover shrimp cage that was drifting away
Two men drowned in separate incidents while engaging in water sports in Hong Kong’s Sai Kung on Sunday.
In the first incident, a 67-year-old man was part of a group of 28 people who took a boat trip from Pak Sha Wan.
He was reported missing while swimming around the boat at a spot 250 metres (820 feet) off Tai Long Sai Wan and was later found unconscious on a nearby rocky beach.
He was airlifted to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan by helicopter. Emergency services tried to resuscitate the man on the way but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Man drowns in waters off Hong Kong’s Sai Kung while on boat trip
In a separate incident, a 68-year-old man drowned off the island of Nga Ying Pai in Sai Kung around lunchtime.
He was fishing on the small island on the southwestern side of Tung Lung Chau with four others, including his wife and friends.
He tripped and fell into the water while trying to recover a shrimp cage that had drifted away.
A friend tried to save him but failed and sustained back injuries.
Elderly man drowns while swimming at Hong Kong’s Deep Water Bay Beach
A canoeist nearby called the authorities after spotting the man 10 metres off Nga Ying Pai at around 12.30pm.
He was recovered by a marine police vessel and rushed to hospital where he was declared dead.
His 66-year-old male friend was treated for minor injuries.
Police are investigating both incidents.
