Hong Kong experienced a “wet and unseasonably hot” September - the third hottest in recorded history - as the cooler monsoon affecting the city was weaker than normal, the forecaster has said.

The Hong Kong Observatory said on Friday that the city’s mean air temperature during the month was 29.2 degrees Celsius (84.6 Fahrenheit), 1.3 degrees above the average of the same month’s figures from 1991 to 2020.

“Mainly due to the weaker-than-normal northeast monsoon over southern China, September 2024 was much hotter than usual in Hong Kong,” it said.

The mean daily maximum temperature stood at 32 degrees Celsius, 1.5 degrees higher than average, while the daily minimum temperature was 26.8 degrees Celsius, 0.7 degrees higher than usual.

Twelve very hot weather warnings were issued across the month, with the longest one lasting nearly 64 hours, from 6.45am on September 1 to 10.25pm on September 3.

“Under the influence of an anticyclone aloft, the weather of Hong Kong was very hot with sunny periods during the day on the first four days of the month,” the Observatory said.
