A 63-year-old hiker has died in Hong Kong hours after he and three others were attacked by stinging insects in the Tai Po countryside.

The four hikers – two men and two women – were exploring Pat Sin Leng along the Wilson Trail at about 4pm when they were attacked by the flying insects. The group rushed away to find shelter.

One of the women, who was stung on the head, called police for help and said they had been attacked by beelike insects.

Rescuers found three of the group near Lai Pek Shan and launched a search for the fourth hiker, one of the men, who had gone missing.

He was found in about four hours but had already fallen into a coma.
