Fourteen people were injured in Hong Kong after a coach struck a footbridge and had the front of its roof ripped off near the Heung Yuen Wai checkpoint on Tuesday.
Police received a report at 12.12pm after the coach went up an auxiliary road linked to Lin Ma Hang Road in Ta Kwu Ling and hit the underside of a pedestrian bridge.
This section of the road is restricted to cars only. It has a height limit of 2.4 metres (7.9 feet), while the tour bus was reportedly more than three metres tall.
The front part of the coach’s roof was damaged after colliding with the footbridge.

Following the accident, the vehicle was parked on a sloping auxiliary road that leads up to the main control point facility.
The force said the 14 people, aged 38 to 85, sustained slight injuries and were taken to three hospitals. They are all from mainland China.
According to a police source, the 57-year-old driver, who was unhurt, said it was his first time operating along that route and that the accident occurred due to unfamiliarity with the road.
Police arrested the man on suspicion of dangerous driving. The case has been handed over to the New Territories North traffic accident investigation unit.
Photos and footage from local media show emergency personnel in safety vests and helmets on the ramp, while numerous passengers are visible through the windows of the damaged vehicle.
At least three similar traffic accidents took place at the same location previously.
On April 23 this year, a container was nearly detached from a truck which crashed into the bridge in a similar way. The 46-year-old driver escaped unharmed.
On October 20 last year, a coach had its windscreen shattered and front severely damaged after it struck the bridge, with the driver, 25, sustaining minor injuries.
Another truck also hit the bridge on June 29, 2023. Its container was seriously damaged but the driver was not injured.
The Transport Department said the road section was restricted to private cars and motorcycles, with signs installed at the entrance to show this.
Additionally, two sets of traffic signs indicating vehicle height limits were placed 60 metres and 240 metres before the pedestrian footbridge. A height restriction sign was also installed on the footbridge.
The department said that following the accident in April, it had added road markings in July stating “Private cars and motorcycles only” on the carriageway leading to a level of the Heung Yuen Wai control point.
But Ringo Lee Yiu-pui, honorary life president of the Hong Kong, China Automobile Association, said recent incidents showed that the existing signage was insufficient and authorities should consider additional measures.
He suggested adopting height detection systems similar to those planned for the soon-to-open Central Kowloon Bypass. These systems could display the licence plate numbers of vehicles exceeding the height limit on overhead gantries, which he said would be more effective than relying solely on roadside signage.
As a final line of defence before the bridge, Lee proposed installing red traffic lights that would stop all vehicles, including those in violation. Police could then be alerted to intercept and redirect traffic along the one-way route.
